What is Black Friday?
While historically the hugely popular shopping day of Black Friday revolved around the timing of American Thanksgiving (and still does), in recent years it has definitely made its way to Canada. Black Friday falls on the Friday following American Thanksgiving and signals the start of holiday shopping “season”.
We Canadians have, more and more, begun to participate in this tradition (but without the extreme lineups). There are plenty of opportunities to find some fantastic deals in Halifax on Black Friday weekend. Both big box and small, locally-owned shops are offering great holiday shopping deals to kick off the festive season.
For a truly Halifax experience, I recommend taking the time to explore neighbourhoods with great independent shops to start your Black Friday experience. Our part of town, the Quinpool Road Mainstreet District, is home to over 120 businesses. Santa will be making an appearance on Saturday November 30 and there will also be a pet parade!
The nearby Spring Garden Road Shopping District has a mix of brand name stores and local businesses, with tons of parking and great restaurants.
Check out Downtown Halifax, where many stores are offering their own unique Black Friday sales and hand-made products that you simply can’t find at the mall. If you’re a Twitter or Instagram user, you have a chance to #winwhatyouwish with the Downtown Halifax hashtag contest!
If big brand names are your thing, make plans to head to the Halifax Shopping Centre (less than 10-minute drive from our hotel) or Dartmouth Crossing for a full day of Black Friday discount shopping.
